David's Interview
Saturday, 02 June 2007
I recently introduced my brother-in-law's girlfriend to Anything Box and last I heard she says she's "unhealthily addicted to your art." There's a singer my wife introduced me to named Eva Cassidy. She had a magical voice, but died of cancer in her early 30's, before she became "known" in a deserved sense. Will it bother you if your art never had a chance to be enjoyed by more people…as I know there are millions out there who just don't know what they're missing?

Claude: Sorry about your friend. I never actually thought about this. I guess in the end, an artist does things for their own entertainment, then feels compulsion to share. I don't care how many people like it, but I would be sad if it wasn't shared with the world.

What do you hope to be remembered for when you pass?

Claude: Being a good person, a good father. At least I hope that's how I'm remembered. As far as my art? It goes on without me...

I really think that you and Dania singing together are magic and probably, next to the lyric genius, make your art most special to me. How did that magic come to be?

Claude: I met her in a club when I gave her a flyer for a show. I didn't have a band, but I had a show. It's a Claude thing. Don't worry about how it will happen, just know that it will. I love singing with her.

What do you think of The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson? It's documented they played a large role in inspiring the creativity of the Beatles (Pet Sounds before Sgt. Peppers, for example), and vice versa.

Claude: Brian is a genius of course. Tormented souls make the best music.

How do you picture "retirement"?

Claude: I don't. But I guess I see it as an opportunity to paint, write a book or two and travel.

Have you found any soul mates along the way?

Claude: Always. I love my friends. I love my wife!

Why all the connections/references to robots?

Claude: I am fascinated by them, especially old tin ones.

Do you invest in the company iRobot?

Claude: Nah. Those are the types that we will be at war with in the future. I like clunky dumb robots. They have charm.

What makes you smile most?

Claude: Seeing people happy, going about.

What makes you laugh the heartiest?

Claude: Jim Carrey.

When did you know you wanted to make music for a living?

Claude: LOL. When it became clear that it was paying the bills and painting wasn't!

What is "vacation" to you?

Claude: Going to NYC and doing "the soak", my term for taking in the atmosphere, the sights, the people. Reading a good book on a mountain side...

Are you much of an outdoorsman?

Claude: I want to be, but suburbia has all but removed this from us. I still want to be. I love hiking, for example, but I don't do it as much as I enjoy it in my head.

Do you write the lyrics or the music first?

Claude: Mostly music first, lyrics second. But not a rule.

What is the general process you go through as you create a piece of art (a song)? One at a time, or jump back and forth as inspiration comes, for example.

Claude: I try really hard to finish a something as soon as it begins. However, there are usually 100 somethings going on in my head, so it does not work out that way. The process does not lend itself to full tilt organization. It is an illusion that I try to conjure to tell myself I am almost there... Jumping back in forth in time is part of what I do.

Do you watch American Idol? If so, what do you think of it and would you have "auditioned" if that show were around when you were younger?

Claude: We would have bombed. Or, I would be remembered as the first contestant to tell that ******* off on TV, with about 100 bleeps for the amount of times I called him an english F***ckface. I really hate that show. Want to talk about robots? That's what they are building.
I see no connection to art there, and they trash someone who is new, has a dream, and needs confidence. And what do they do? "You have the most horrid voice in the world. Stick to this or that, but don't even dream..." Terrible. It is hard work becoming an artist, and the encouragement one gets makes a difference. I come from the punk ethic. If put on the spot, could any of these "idols" come up with an original thought?
