1. Is the ability to create art a luxury for people who have infinite time and money? Claude: NO! I am a firm believer than anyone who has an imagination can do this. Not everyone can afford the luxury of time. Which brings up an interesting thought. All our life's toils, is it for money and things... Or are we working to have more time? Time is expensive. Not art. Although I suppose material for creating art can be. I stand by 'no' as my answer. 2. Have you ever had problems balancing fatherhood with music? Claude: Yes. But, there is always time for everything. I'm not perfect, and this is a challenge for everyone, but we all do our best. 3. What is your favorite microphone / mic-pre combo? Claude: AKG 414TLII and TL Audio EQ1, so far. 4. Two-inch tape or harddisk? Claude: I love tape. It's dead. I have found a way to sneak its secrets and make them work on my computer. So HD is the best. It's also fast, and affordable. 5. Anything Box -- a box where one might find ANYTHING! -- so why the Diary as a side project? Why weren't the (brilliant) Diary recordings released as Anything Box? Claude: The main thing that comes to mind is performance. The Diary songs are experiments in a different mind set, which is good for me, but not condusive to how Abox is structured. My bandmates already have shitloads of drama to contend with. I don't need to add to it by saying, "Uh, for this tour, you will play bass, and we need an extra guitar player, a drummer..." We tried this, and it was a failure. The band almost fell apart. That division between The Diary and Abox is growing wider as well. Abox is electronic, always will be. 6. "Regress into subconscious dreams, eluding all the outside thoughts..." Damn good lines, which makes me wonder... if the inner world is peace, and the outer world is (sometimes? often?) difficult, then what really is the purpose of being awake? Claude: Thank you for the compliment. Isn't reality but a dream? If all this is a dream, and we have the ability to change it, which I believe 100%, then being awake is more fun than being in the throws of sleep. I think everything is possible. Dreams used to hold special facination for me, now I know that I am dreaming all the time... Change your reality. 7. I wrote to you, once, about fifteen years ago -- I was in a, um, "wierd" state of addiction recovery. If I gave you the heebeegeebies, can you accept my apology? FWIW your music (and not alot else) helped me get through all that, which was all I was really trying to say... Claude: You didn't. There's no need for an apology. Truth is what it is. I am grateful to have had the chance in my life to do something, even if it is for a few people here and there. It is an amazing journey, this life, and I accept it as it comes... 8. What is the weirdest question anyone has ever asked you? Claude: #7 :) Sorry, had to do it! I'm kidding, though. I don't know, really. 9. What is the purpose of an interview? Claude: To document, to confirm a suspicion, to know or to give an answer, to educate, and in the music sense, to give a little more of one's self. 10."You think I'm lost, but I'm on my way." Where are you headed? Where will Claude be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? Claude: To the ends of the earth. Into the stratosphere of the ultimate experiences. My livingroom. That's where I'm going. In 20 years, I will be watching the world through the eyes of my imagination. Wait, I'm doing that now. Reality is a dream, see? |
